Who We Are
We are a collection of individuals committed to bringing world class amateur DanceSport to Georgia. Our members are dedicated amateur DanceSport enthusiast who are either competitors, parents of competitors, or people who just love DanceSport. We support amateur competitors of all ages.
The organization first started as an idea from Holly Iyer. She had witnessed the success of the long running "Gumbo" competition of Baton Rouge, LA and wanted that success to be repeated here. She teamed up with Mark Garber who was then president of Atlanta Metro DanceSport and a long time volunteer with USA Dance, Inc. They decided to establish a state wide non-profit with the focused mission of establishing a national competition in Atlanta and seek the support of other individuals and organizations both inside and outside of USA Dance, Inc.
Our Current Work
We are focused on our mission in stages:
- Start with a relatively small, fun, non sanctioned competition(s) for 2014. By starting small we can build the experience base of volunteers. These small competitions along with funding from donors will help to build a financial footing for larger competitions.
- We will have organizational meetings throughout 2015. We will work toward having a sanctioned competition in that year. We will petition for a National Qualifying Event (NQE) for 2017.
- Establish and run an NQE in 2020.
In the past USA Dance, Inc. (formerly United States Ballroom Association) would allow local organizations to host national events. Georgia Dancesport is thinking beyond the NQE to one day host world level dancesport competition with local Georgia talent participating.
